Arizona shipment

Received a shipment from Arizona today.  Unfortunately, it's too late in the season for most of the cool critters I wanted to stock up on, such as Jerusalem crickets, Olios huntsmen, western black widows and those huge Lord of the Rings size wolf spiders.  So this is a rather small package, and about half is for my personal collection.

Tohono Vinegaroon
Mastigoproctus tohono

The Arizona variety of vinegaroons that I usually get.

Blue Death Feigning Beetles
Asbolus verrucosus

Coolest little beetles you'll ever see.  Disturb them and they play dead in a dramatic fashion.

Oklahoma Brown Tarantula
Aphonopelma hentzi

My supplier only had two left.  Bigger than slings but still pretty small.  About 1".

Madrean Red Rump Tarantula
Aphonopelma vorhiesi

A new addition for my collection.  My sucky iPhone camera didn't pick up the deep red of her abdomen.  Beautiful smaller Aphonopelma but not a dwarf.
Speaking of dwarves...

Paloma Dwarf Tarantula
Aphonopelma paloma

Yes, that's an adult.  The smallest species of tarantula in the world. Maxes out at about 2 inches.

Madrean Dwarf Tarantula
Aphonopelma cf madera

An undescribed Aphonopelma dwarf from the Madera Sky Islands.

Arizona Rock Scorpion
Smeringurus vachonii vachonii

Darker cousin to the dune scorpion.

Florida shipment

I really have to post more than once a year...

Shipment from Florida arrived yesterday.

Regal Jumping Spider
Phidippus regius

The spider that everyone wants!  Looks like a male heavy, so I might have to sell them in pairs only.

Florida Vinegaroon
Mastigoproctus floridana

The Florida variety of one of the coolest invertebrate on the planet. What's the difference between these goons and the ones from southwest?  They're from Florida!

And surprisingly, those are the only two Florida species I received from the Florida shipment.
The others...

Arizona Blonde Tarantula "New River"
Aphonopelma chalcodes

The "New River" variety of the ever popular Arizona Blondes.

Rio Grand Gold Tarantula
Aphonopelma moderatum

One of the most desirable US Aphonopelmas.  They are absolute beauties.  And every bit as docile and easy to keep as the Arizona Blondes.

Emperor Scorpion
Pandinus imperator

These are TRUE emperor scorpions.  Many of what are being sold as emperors are not.

Striped Knee Tarantula
Aphonopelma seemanii

Don't know why I picked this one up.  My wholesaler only had one and claimed it's female.  Probably going to keep her for myself.

Arizona shipment

It's been way too long since I've posted.  So here's the selection of critters I just received from Arizona, which will be available at the Havre de Grace show.

Oklahoma Brown Tarantula

Aphonopelma hentzi

Finally got more of these wonderful Ts in stock.

Arizona Blonde Tarantula

Aphonopelma chalcodes

My personal favorite and all around best pet spider.
Although, one of them did bite me:
That's a first.

Jerusalem Cricket

Stenopelmatus sp

They're not from Jerusalem.  They're not crickets.  What are they?  They're cool.

Carolina Wolf Spider

Hogna carolinensis

I get these wolf spiders in all the time, but never this huge.  The spider in the picture was taken in a 16 oz deli cup.

Green Lynx Spider

Peucetia viridans

First time offering these.  They're green and like a cross between a jumping spider and a huntsman.

Western Black Widow

Latrodectus hesperus

Bigger than their southern cousins I get from Florida.

Arizona Bark Scorpion

Centruroides sculpturatus

Fun and communal little scorpion with a nasty sting.

Blue Death Feigning Beetle    Asbolus verrucosus

Mexican Death Feigning Beetle   Asbolus mexicanus

Tried and true Blue Death Feigning Beetles and their Mexican cousins.

Farewell, Tofu

Our matriarch, my best friend and loyal companion of over 13 years has crossed the rainbow bridge and joined the Wild Hunt.  Rest in peace, Tofu.  You will never be forgotten.  Life won't be the same without you.

Backyard Herping

Yesterday, in the rain, I went out isopod hunting in my backyard.  Not much luck with the isopods, the only ones I saw were the fast ones that someone who is as slow and fat as me would never be able to catch by hand. But I was lucky in finding snakes.
Under the second rock I flipped:
One of the prettiest garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) I've ever found in my yard.
Under the next rock, a large flat piece of slate, I flipped:

Another garter snake, the typical ugly ones I find in my yard.  And surprisingly, a ringneck snake (Diadophis punctatus).  I usually see one every year or two, and sometimes in the house.
Under the next rock:

Another garter and the very common Dekay's brown snake (Storeria dekayi).
Six snakes in 5 minutes, not too shabby. There are six species of snakes here on Staten Island and I'm lucky to have 3 of them in my yard.

And for something completely different, here's my Okefenokee Fishing Spider (Dolomedes okefinokensis) eating a 3" horn worm:
